Troll

Forum trolls are users that repeatedly and deliberately breach the netiquette of an established online community, posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages to bait or excite users into responding or to test the forum rules and policies, and with that the patience of the forum staff. Their provocative behavior may potentially start flame wars (see below) or other disturbances. Responding to a troll's provocations is commonly known as 'feeding the troll' and is generally discouraged, as it can encourage their disruptive behavior.

Spamming

Forum spamming is a breach of netiquette where users repeat the same word or phrase over and over, but differs from multiple posting in that spamming is usually a willful act which sometimes has malicious intent. This is a common trolling technique. It can also be traditional spam, unpaid advertisements that are in breach of the forum's rules. Spammers utilize a number of illicit techniques to post their spam, including the use of bonnets.

HYPERTEXT and HYPERMEDIA

What is HYPERTEXT?

-the medium used to transmit the information in a non-linear fashion via computer by clicking on a "link" using a mouse.

Hypertext links can access numerous types of material, for example, educational material such as course syllabus and resources, explanatory notes for a Web-based document, sources for references, explanatory notes, and commentaries by other writers, links to other relevant resources or publications, graphics, sound, video. By simply clicking, the user can be taken to a new bit of information, a new Web page or multimedia such as sound, graphics or video.

What is
HYPERMEDIA?

- refers to information linked together in an easily accessible way. Hypermedia is more a method for accessing available information, which is the end result.

An example of hypermedia is hypertext links. When an Internet user enters a search term in Google or Yahoo and clicks the search button to find results, the information is presented as hypertext links with a bit of text describing the link. This helps the web surfer decide if these links are relevant to them and if they are worth viewing. If the first link is something that would be useful based on the blurb provided, clicking on the hypermedia — in this case a hypertext link — will take the web surfer to relevant information regarding their search.

ADVANTAGES OF E-LEARNING

  • Any time. A participant can access the learning programme at any time that is convenient -not just during the specific 1-3-hour period that is set for a conventional course. Cross-time-zone communication, difficult to arrange in real time, is as easy as talking to someone across town when using the Internet.
  • Any place. The participants do not have to meet. That means they can be anywhere. International sharing is feasible. Individuals can log on at work, home, the library, in a community learning center or from their hotel when traveling.
  • Asynchronous interaction. Unlike face-to-face or telephone conversations, electronic mail does not require participants to respond immediately. As a result, interactions can be more succinct and to-the-point, discussion can stay more on-track, and people can get a chance to craft their responses. This can lead to more thoughtful and creative conversations.
  • Group collaboration. Electronic messaging creates new opportunities for groups to work together, creating shared electronic conversations that can be thoughtful and more permanent than voice conversations. Sometimes aided by on-line moderators, these net seminars can be powerful for learning and problem-solving.
  • New educational approaches. Many new options and learning strategies become economically feasible through online courses. For instance, the technology makes it feasible to utilize faculty anywhere in the world and to put together faculty teams that include master teachers, researchers, scientists, and experienced professional developers. Online courses also can provide unique opportunities for teachers to share innovations in their own work with the immediate support of electronic groups and expert faculty.
